Sustainable Packaging Options To Reduce Environmental Impact

More businesses are trying their best to reduce their carbon emissions and protect the environment these days, from using recycled water to switching to energy-efficiency light bulbs.

Something else they could try to slow down climate change is use sustainable packaging for their goods.

Here are some green options to try:

Cardboard packaging

Lots of people assume packaging has to be lined with plastic or filled with polystyrene balls to be secure. However, there are many other options that use more sustainable materials, such as cardboard.

You can choose bespoke cardboard boxes if you’re worried your goods are a unique shape. Otherwise, there is a huge range of cardboard mailers you could go for, including box wrap boxes, wine gift bottle boxes, pizza or picnic boxes, bulk bottle boxes and postal mailer boxes.

As they come in different shapes and sizes, they are designed to fit the product and, therefore, protect it better.

Paper Bags

While years ago businesses favoured brightly-coloured packaging with their logo printed all over it, these days it’s all about subtlety and sustainability.

Therefore, brown or white paper bags are very much en vogue, as well as being better for the environment.

Bags with the self-opening square design make it easy to protect the good inside, so nothing gets squished in the packing of it.

They are made from biodegradable and recyclable materials, and are also compostable. Therefore, they have become a hugely popular choice among companies wanting to shout about their eco credentials.

Cardboard sheets

If you need protective packaging and don’t want to use foam rolls or sheets, bubble wrap or loose fill peanuts, you could opt for cardboard sheets or matting instead.

Cardboard sheets are ideal if you are packing things on top of one another, such as plates or pictures.

The matting, on the other hand, is a sensible option if you want to cushion something fragile in the box. Alternatively, you might need it if the goods are in an awkward shape and you want to protect them from hitting each other or the edge of the box during transportation.

Biodegradable loose fill chips or peanuts

Another option is to use biodegradable loose fill chips or peanuts, as these can be reused or recycled.

Natural wood wool is also a good choice, with both adding cushioning to the package in transit.

Envelopes

It might feel quite old school putting things in envelopes, but they are still an incredibly useful packaging option.

You can get a large number of envelope sizes, so you can fit objects up to A4. There’s also the option of board back envelopes, which offer better protection for your goods when they are being posted.

This avoids having to use plastic envelopes or larger forms of packaging, and the paper and cardboard can be easily recycled.
